The Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Arizona invites applications for two tenure-track/tenured faculty positions. One faculty opening is in CubeSat or SmallSat propulsion. Technical expertise in chemical, electrical or new, unconventional, hybrid propulsion systems is desired. Candidates with demonstrated expertise that blends theory, experiment and practice in spacecraft propulsion will be viewed favorably. In addition, having experience and interest in propulsion support technologies including power systems, fuel storage, Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) will be an advantage. One faculty opening is in nonequilibrium processes related to high-speed flows. Technical expertise in areas of plasma physics, chemical reactions, reacting flows and computational physics is desired. Candidates with demonstrated knowledge in theory and new computational approaches will be viewed favorably. Appointments may be at all levels and rank, although Assistant Professor is envisioned. The positions can begin as early as January 2019. The successful candidates will be expected to develop and teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels including those from underrepresented backgrounds, establish internationally recognized and externally funded research programs, advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and undertake service activities within the University and in the professional community at national and international levels. Opportunities exist for synergy with research activities in the Department and the University, including an initiative in Space Situational Awareness (SSA), CubeSats and Earth Sciences and an initiative in Hypersonic Aerothermodynamics and Materials.RequirementsRequired qualifications are a Ph.D. degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline, and demonstrated research potential or accomplishments.
