The location of this role is the Hermosa Project site near Patagonia, Arizona

The Role

The primary purpose of the Senior Project Engineer of Shafts is to provide input and oversight of the EPCM and contractor(s) for the Underground Project for the Production and Ventilation shafts construction and sinking activities at the Hermosa Project. This includes, but is not limited to, design and work executed by the EPCM, contractors and/or other Engineering Service Providers (ESPs) directly engaged by the South32 Underground Project team; Provide and review of engineering design, maintenance and operational functions for compliance with South32 and regulatory body safety standards; Provide technical assistance during the equipment procurement phase including participation in technical bid evaluations, Requests for Information (RFI) response and attending vendor factory inspections as required; Provide review, as directed, of designs for shaft facilities, including both temporary and permanent, taking into account, fit for purpose and hand over requirements that meets the long term needs of the Hermosa site; Application of project management functions and principles in the supervision of detailed engineering packages including reporting, progress measurement, quality control, forecasting and contract management. Development and mentoring of peers, trades people and operators; Champion business improvement initiatives and provide engineering review and advice to justify, implement and monitor all improvements with view to maximize safe shaft sinking advance rates.

Accountabilities (Include but are not limited to):

Individual Accountabilities:

• Provide technical support to Manager of Construction and Manager of Shafts.
• Assists in management of the site construction and shaft sinking contractors.
• Ensures that work is always executed in a safe manner.
• Support the mining team with technical services including mine engineering, survey, ventilation, geotechnical, drill and blast.
• Deliver work to plan, track task progress and resolve issues that block completion, escalating where appropriate.
• Ensures that S32 corporate safety and business goals are met or exceeded.
• Ensures that project construction activities and services are executed in conformity with South32's environmental policies and plans.
• Ensures that project construction activities and services are executed in conformity with South32's community relations policies and plans.
• Oversee other engineering and QA/QC teams and requirements.
• Ensure engineering governance over the fixed plants (LoM Friction, Aux. Hoist(s) and Double Drum)
• Assist with the preparation of Sourcing Strategies for major works packages as required.
• Deploy available resources, considering their most effective and efficient use of team priorities.
• Assists with preparation of annual budgets with input and assistance from the Project Controls Team.
• Review project sinking and construction schedules.
• Assists with implementation of remedial recovery action as required.
• Ensures strict compliance with South32 Change Management processes.
• Ensures timely delivery of project shaft sinking and construction services to internal stakeholders.
• Engineering Department, Consultants, internal stakeholders and the South32 Construction team;
• Extract data from sources such as plans, engineering reports, and specifications to organize the work of construction contractors and vendors.
• Works with Project Services to ensure that equipment and material deliveries are coordinated and ensure that Care & Perseveration requirements are correctly implemented and documented.
• Manage free issue consumables such as (concrete, ground support and explosives etc) along with the sinking contractor.
• Periodically reviews the Construction Management Execution Plan to ensure conformity with current requirements and revise as required.
• Assists with the compilation of shaft sinking and construction documentation for upcoming work packages.
• Identifies sinking contractor performance issues and works internal stakeholders to resolve issues.
• Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory and building code requirements including Federal, State, and Local.
• Ensures conformity with industry codes of practice and standards.
• Participates in the South32 site Quality Circles initiative.
• Ensures that all work conforms with the specified quality standards.
• Assigns, schedules, reviews, and evaluates work of subordinates; Performs other duties as assigned by the Shaft Manager. Qualifications, Skills, and Expertise:
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical, Mining, Electrical or relevant discipline)
  • Minimum 5 years relevant shaft experience, or otherwise the significant practical experience and on the job training.
  • Minimum 5 years of large-scale mining construction site management experience across all trades
  • Drive company vehicle and be covered under company insurance
  • Visible field safety leadership and an ability to drive safety and performance excellence.
  • Project Management desirable, shaft sinking, and hoisting experience is essential, further underground experience would be an asset.
  • Exposure to business improvement programs would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of project management sinking methodologies and tools used to track cost, time, and quality
  • Knowledge of management concepts and best practices
  • Strong and effective communication and engagement skills
  • Relationship building skills: demonstrated empathy, emotional intelligence, and cross-cultural effectiveness with the ability to achieve consensus and build alignment cooperatively
  • Maintain high standards of professional and ethical conduct
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel AutoCAD and other Engineering software programs
  • Strong English language written and oral communication skills
  • Experience managing and coordinating both union and non- union craft labour.
  • Experience managing and coordinating project logistics is an asset.
  • Experience managing construction contracts and vendor services contracts.
  • Experience working with teams and interacting with contractors.
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural setting.
  • Proven track record of developing and maintaining a safe work culture.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing Environmental Compliance obligations.
