Position Highlights The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the University of Arizona (UArizona) is seeking nominations and applications for a department head with excellent leadership skills and enthusiasm for world class research, innovative teaching, and industry/government/community/healthcare collaborations. The BME Department Head, who reports to the College of Engineering dean, should be a visionary who can lead a diverse group of faculty, staff and students; oversee modern educational research laboratories and facilities; and, most importantly, spearhead the continuing transformation of BME for the challenges of the 21st century.Successful candidates are expected to have extensive research and teaching experience at a level sufficient to qualify for appointment as a tenured Full Professor. The BME Department at the UArizona has a strong local, national, and international reputation for undergraduate and graduate education and research. The department has 21 tenured or tenure track faculty, 2 career track faculty, and 32 joint faculty that support teaching, research, and service missions. The department has more than 170 undergraduate (sophomore-senior), a total of 31 M.S students, and 42 Ph.D. students enrolled. Undergraduate research is a major emphasis of the BME Department as almost 90% of our undergraduate students are placed in research labs and nearly 50% go on to graduate school.The UArizona, a Research I, Land-grant, and Hispanic Serving institution, ranks in the top 4% of all US Institutions, with more than $761 million in annual research expenditures, according to data from the National Science Foundation. The annual research expenditures for the department exceed $3.5 million.

  • Collaboratively develop andannually review a three-year department plan that supports the University ofArizona's strategic goals and aligns with related programs at the university
  • Implement a plan to keep internaland external stakeholders informed on progress and changes
  • Make equity-informeddecisions on faculty recruitment, diversity, development, performance,retention, and promotion
  • Lead the department inachieving student and faculty recruitment and retention goals
  • Keep the department focusedon educating BME graduates that are equipped to be productive in modernindustrial settings, graduate school, medical and other professional schools
  • Identify and promoteresearch opportunities and actively facilitate and participate ininterdisciplinary research
  • Maintain existing andcreate new relationships with alumni and the biomedical engineering industryand research community
  • Leverage relationships withthe biomedical industry and research community to connect students withapplicable employment opportunities including internships and full-timepositions
  • Increase the departmentsresearch expenditure and national ranking
  • Drive research excellenceand cross-disciplinary collaborations, particularly with health sciences
  • Maintain an inclusive,positive workplace environment
  • Work with College and UA leadership on opportunities to expand the program,including satellite campuses
  • Strengthen existing tiesand build new relationships with stakeholders such as industry, leadinggraduate and medical programs, including leveraging and growing current strong relationships with UA Health Sciences
  • Oversee the department'soperations including budgets, resources, fiscal management, and ABETaccreditation.
  • Foster a sense of communityfor students, alumni, staff, and faculty
  • Assist the College ofEngineering in fund raising activities
  • Be a key participant of the College of Engineering leadership teamKnowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
    • Demonstrate effective managerial leadership, clear communication, and acommitment to shared governance, community engagement, and diversity, equity,and inclusion
    • Demonstrate high ethical standardsand be expected to operate in a transparent and collegial way

    • Proven leadership skills with multi-disciplinary teams
    • Capable of inspiring and recruiting great students as well as exceptional faculty and staff
    • Commitment to an inclusive departmental and college culture Minimum Qualifications
      • The successful candidatewill have a distinguished record of achievement in scholarship, research,and/or professional practice commensurate with an appointment at the rank ofFull Professor with tenure
      • Earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Biomedical Engineering, or relatedfield
      • Scholarly achievement,including a record of technical papers published in internationally recognized,peer-reviewed journals
      • Track record ofcollaboratively building a vision and the skills to follow through to make thevision a reality
      • History of successfulfunding from industry and government Preferred Qualifications
        • Administrative experience as head or associate head, center director, or equivalent leadership position
        • Membership on boards of academic journals and/or professional associations
        • Have successfully established internationally renowned research program with high impact output
        • Experience collaborating with medical schools, university health science centers, or other private or government health care organizations
        • Experience working with stakeholders, either through direct employment or through cooperative research and development activities
        • Demonstrated record of engagement with diversity issues, diverse students, women in engineering, and other diversity related faculty, staff, and student communities
