Job Duties
For Caterpillar, digital means using technology to extract data from our machines and engines and transform it into valuable recommendations or "insights," to help customers make better, more informed decisions and help Caterpillar make robust products with the lowest total ownership cost. Our products generate and process large amounts of data from sensors, on-board models, and control algorithms in real-time creating real-world machine usage information. Verification/Validation Engineers are fully engaged in digital, both through a technical awareness of the digital components & systems which they test, and through expertly utilizing digital tools and methodologies when they plan and execute tests.
The key role of an Electronic Systems Verification/Validation Engineering Specialist is that of principal contributor of Product Quality deliverables associated with complex technical engineering problems. The incumbent may also be accountable for the improvement of processes. In addition to demonstrating technical expertise, a person in this position may be called on to act as a team and/or project leader, but major focus is on technical delivery. Directing work with other units, suppliers, customers, and teams require the incumbent to demonstrate skill in negotiation, building consensus, and achieving compromise. Impact of decisions made by this position may be far-reaching, to include the project team or immediate work group, division, and/or business unit, suppliers, internal and external customers, and Caterpillar markets. Decisions may significantly impact warranty, patents, products or processes, technology, and customer perceptions.
Typical Product Quality deliverables for the Electronic Systems Verification/Validation Engineering Specialist include:

  • Clarify product requirements and ensure alignment with appropriate stakeholders

  • Organize and facilitate FMEAs or functional/performance/behavior analyses

  • Assist in the creation of validation plans and define acceptance criteria

  • Evaluate existing validations controls, standard test procedures for effective risk mitigation

  • Execute and/or coordinate execution of product tests

  • Analyze test results and summarize conclusions

  • Document test conclusions with traceability

  • Track product development issues to completion

  • Communicate technical information to team members and other business units

  • Generate and present accurate reports for validation thoroughness, status, and results

  • Innovate for efficiency and contribute to establishing strategies & tools for new/updated processes

Keeping up with industry trends and new technology breakthroughs is essential and requires continuous learning through self/internet study as well as interaction with other engineers through conferences and papers. Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology. Key skills to broaden at this level include knowledge of the NPI process, business understanding and customer value, technical project management, and communication skills. Experience in more than one engineering function is desirable, and experience in more than one business or service unit would be helpful.
