Position Details Position Information Title Assistant Director, Career Development Office Department Law Administration (3601) Location Main Campus Position Summary The University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law seeks applications for the position of Assistant Director, Career Development Office ("CDO"). The CDO is one of the largest student services offices at the College of Law, providing a variety of important resources and events for Arizona Law's students and alumni. The primary responsibility of the person in the Assistant Director position is to advise first- and second-year law students regarding their career development. The position will work closely with other members of the CDO and other departments at the Law College to achieve the CDO's goals for student employment outcomes. The position will report to the Assistant Dean for Career Development on a full-time, fiscal (twelve-month), appointed basis. The CDO's regular office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Duties & Responsibilities 1. Student Career Counseling a. Provide individualized, tailored counseling to first- and second-year law students and assist them in developing short- and long-term career goals. Conduct student counseling through both scheduled appointments and on a walk-in basis. Conduct regular outreach to counselees to promote career services and offer assistance. b. Maintain data on student employment goals. Use data to counsel students about job search strategies, professional development, and networking. c. Develop and maintain career resources such as sample resumes and cover letters. Assist counselees with resume and cover letter writing, including giving them thorough written feedback on their draft resume and cover letter assignments required by Preparing to Practice, a mandatory first-year course. Meet individually with counselees to review resumes, cover letters, and other application materials. d. Assist counselees with using the Law College's online job bank and recruitment system, CareerCAT. e. Conduct mock interviews with counselees and provide constructive feedback. f. Develop, implement, and conduct career development related programming, including live events and podcasts. 2. Student Employment Outcomes a. Manage, track, and analyze employment goals and employment status for the counseling population described above. b. Provide periodic reports on student employment to the CDO's Assistant Dean. c. Work closely with the CDO's Director of Externships on matching students with available externship opportunities. 3. Employer Relations and Outreach a. Cultivate and develop opportunities for law students. Use data described above to develop strategies for same. Work with Assistant Director for Employer Engagement to execute strategic plans. b. Assist with connecting students to regional and national employers. 4. Special Events a. Assist with and attend CDO special events, which take place approximately three times per year and will require work outside of regular business hours. b. Assist with managing and running off-campus interviewing events, including traveling occasionally to out-of-state events that take place in August each year. 5. Keep current on regional and national trends in the legal job market. 6. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Minimum Qualifications * Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school. * At least two years of experience practicing law. * Ability to track and report on progress towards target goals. * Ability to plan for and meet deadlines. * Ability to work independently and as a member of a team. * Ability to work in a busy environment and juggle multiple priorities. * Excellent judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality. * Familiarity with the practice of law, legal processes, court systems, and law office organization and management. * Knowledge of major career paths within the practice of law and law-related business positions. * Superior knowledge of legal resume and cover letter format. * Superior writing, grammar, proofreading, and editing skills. * Strong oral and interpersonal communication skills. * Ability to provide individualized, tailored counseling. * Sensitivity to the needs to law students. * Sensitivity to the needs of diverse and multicultural constituencies. Preferred Qualifications * Previous higher education experience. * Previous counseling and/or mentoring experience. * Previous attorney recruitment experience. * Familiarity with recruiting software programs.
